Wireless Wonder by Ian Plenderleith for DCUnited.com
The secret of good radio commentary is to tantalise listeners and keep them on the edge... You don’t want the inane opinionating indulged in by their TV counterparts - you want plain description and the feeling that if something exciting isn’t actually happening, then goals and chances might well be just a second or two away.
Limarzi carries this off superbly. Without overtly judging events before him, Limarzi has ways of expressing the emotions of all those in RFK...never once loses touch with the plays before him; doesn’t bore the listener with too many pointless stats; and deftly fills in
downtime with observational quips.
- Is this the future of MLS Commentary? by MLSR for MLS Rumors
Many MLS fans often complain about the lack of quality play-by-play commentators in the league.
However there are a few young American broadcasters like Washington DC radio station WFED’s Tony Limarzi who have both a clear passion for the sport and exquisite game knowledge. Our question to you is an open : Do you think broadcasts like this could be the future? If so do you like it?
- Tony Limarzi Loses It by MLSR for MLS Rumors
One criticism often heaped upon US soccer commentators is that ... they lack passion in the their approach to calling a game and often say nothing to convey the buildup to a goal. That criticism will never be directed at young upcoming commentator for DC United’s radio and sometimes TV broadcasts, Tony Limarzi.
If Tony Limarzi is the future of commentating in the USA then the sport is in good hands.

It's too bad DC doesn't use Limarzi on the TV broadcasts. I'm a fan of his. He's good at two things: telling you who has the ball (and perhaps what his options are), and conveying, by his tone of voice, how likely it is that the current situation will develop into a chance/goal.
These are the two basics for me, the rest is gravy.

Its about enthusiasm, my favorite US commentator is Tony Limarzi. Why? Because he's like a fan, he builds the emotion when the ball is in the box. I listened to an online radio broadcast of a early round USOC match and he made it feel like a final and had me mesmerized.

Tony Limarzi is good though. Reminds me of a latin american commentator.
He has the Best American Goal Call Ever.....
So why doesn't he do DC United's games on TV ?
- CityDave
Tony Limarzi is also awesome. He does the radio announcing for DC United on their local radio stations. But radio announcing is a different beast because the play by play has to be excellent or no one will listen.

I love listening to that guy call games. I'll mute the sound on the TV and turn on his calling sometimes just because it's so much more fun.

[ESPN and ABC] need to add Tony Limarzi to the [World Cup 2010] setup. Anyone who makes calls like these deserves a wider stage.

Hearing Limarzi lose it like that just about made my night. Thanks Tony for the unbridled and unapologetic passion for United. Good stuff.

I loooove listening to Limarzi...

Who did the play-by-play on the MLS feed? I thought it was great. Not only was he naming every player immediately, but after the golazo, he said that it reminded him of WC2006's goal of the tournament -- the one that sent Mexico home in extra time versus Argentina. That's what I was thinking, too.
- Go Penn State!
That was Tony Limarzi, who has done the radio PBP locally for United for some years on WMET (1160 AM). And remember that he doesn't have a color commentator to give him a chance to take a breather; he just goes the full 90.

I'm listening to Tony Limarzi right now online, and i'm looking forward to hear him on 1160 when the MLS season starts.
I've enjoyed the commentator (Tony Limarzi) for a few years now. I won't hear him as often this year, the deli I go to has Direct TV and FSC!.

This guy has to start broadcasting for live games – he is amazing. period.

Agreed. A star is born. His name is Limarzi.
ESPN get on the phone to whoever has this guy’s rights. JP and Harkes are alright but this guy is the future.

If you hate limarzi’s style you hate soccer.

Having listen to Tony Limarzi for years on DC United’s radio broadcasts and sometimes on CSN I can tell youu that we are very lucky to have him. It would be great if he got an opportunity at ESPN but I’d want him to stay here for selfish reasons.
Limarzi is clearly someone who has grown up watching the game in other leagues and his style reflects that.
1. He has the kind of measured, “don’t talk endlessly/let the stadium atmosphere breathe” approach of the English commentators in the EPL.
2. He has the passion of most Latin American and South American futbol commentators.
3. He has the statistical analysis of your American sports commentator but doesn’t beat you over the head with it.

Bring him to South Africa. Please!!!
Leave Marcel Balboa and Dave Whatshisname back here, but bring this guy!
- Martek
How about a two-man booth of Limarzi and Glenn Davis?
- Anonymous
Glenn Davis with Limarzi = Commentary heaven.
Not only that but it would give young Tony Limarzi someone he can study under who has as much passion for the game in his commentary as he does.

I think he should do CONCACAF champions league games or any other games against south american competitors. He’s good at pronouncing names without sounding like too much of a poser (although he needs to relax on the Quaranta). I’d like to see him doing a USA v Mexico game or the entire Gold Cup for that case. I think we need some good english dudes for the world cup though. I’m sorry but nothing else sounds right.
but even as a red bulls fan, this guys got a good announcers voice and describes the play well.
